Online resources
One online source that was used was Scifinder Scholar (TM). This was
invaluable, giving easy access to many different resources with no fuss.
One difficulty is that it is sometimes difficult to save PDF files opened
through the Citrix window through which Scifinder Scholar (TM) is accessed.
Opening the PDF in another browser resolved the problem.
Another online resource that was used was the CORINA
service. This was extremely useful, as without it, it would have been impossible
to have a Chime picture in the project. Care must be taken not to enter an
incorrect structure, though - entering a structure similar to an earlier
one that you have already obtained a Chime picture for often results in receiving
the earlier compound again.
Also, the Science of China homepage (the URL of which I have unfortunately
forgotten) was also useful, as it was from here that I obtained Reference
5. However, this site is not very user friendly, unless you are fluent in
both English and Chinese. The form you have to enter your details into in
order to gain access to the site is in English, but some of the fields are
confusing, and the help files that pop up are in Chinese. Also, when the
password was sent out, the only things in the password that weren't in Chinese
were the user name and the password. This is very strange, as the reports
and the site as a whole are both in English. The site takes quite a while
to work out, but once it is discovered how to download the reports, it is
fairly easy. However, the process of downloading them is confusing, and all
the help pages are in Chinese.
