Treatment -
There is currently no
anti-toxin for Tetrodotoxin. Treatment usually takes the form of
supportive care. Firstly, the toxin should be expelled from the body by
inducing vomiting
should if it has not already occurred. In order to lessen the effects
of the toxin, activated
charcoal can also be used. Secondly, the airway should be secured and
oxygenated.
Further
treatment, such as receiving constant respiration from a machine,
should also
be carried out to maintain the cardiovascular function until the toxin
has been completely
removed from the body. Certain drugs can also help in relieving the
various symptoms
associated with Tetrodotoxin poisoning, one such example is
Antimyasthenics (Cholinergic)
which is administrated to restore motor strength.
